The treatment requires two sessions, with the second session after three weeks for receiving and fitting your crowns.
What to Expect When Getting Dental Crowns
Treatment Plan and Tooth Preparation
After telling your dentist your intentions to get dental crowns, they’ll examine your teeth and take X-rays to determine the suitability of dental crowns for your case. If they find you suitable for the procedure, they’ll create a personalized treatment plan outlining the steps to install the dental crown. They’ll then prepare your teeth by injecting a local anesthetic in your gums and drilling portions of your teeth to accommodate your enamel.
Taking Impressions and Laboratory Fabrication
In the second step, the dentist will take impressions of the teeth surrounding the crowns and the affected tooth. They’ll use a putty-like substance to create molds or an intraoral scanner to get 3D scans. The models and scans are forwarded to a lab that will manufacture your crowns in about three weeks before sending them to the dentist.
Crown Placement and Adjustments
After three weeks, the dentist will create time to fit your crowns. During this session, they’ll place the crown over your teeth, checking the fit and color. If the color and fit are okay, the dentist will cement the crown permanently and make minor adjustments to ensure comfort and a perfect fit.
Final Check and Post-Treatment Care
With the crown in place, the dentist will check the correctness of the fit and ask you to bite on a thin sheet to register your bite. If everything checks out, the dentist will provide instructions for caring for your crowns and maintaining proper dental health before releasing you home.
